A milder version than the original proposal was released after congressional pushback.
The Department of Energy (DOE) finalized the rule requiring new gas stoves to reduce emissions, after controversy circulated through Congress on the topic much of last year.
In early 2023, the Consumer Product Safety Commission suggested that the health concerns of gas stove emissions could lead them to consider a ban, a statement that was published in proximity to the Energy Department’s proposed regulation. Public pushback came from legislators against the regulation of gas stoves. The response was so great that the White House released a statement assuring politicians that gas stoves were not going to be banned.
The Energy Department scaled back the requirements of their final rule on gas stove emissions. In the initial proposal, the recommended requirement allowed new gas stoves to emit only 1.204 million British Thermal Units (BTUs) of energy. The final rule, a compromise between the manufacturing industry and environmentalists, requires that new gas stoves emit no more than 1.77 million BTUs, a requirement that 97 percent of new stoves available currently meet. The rule goes into effect in 2028.
